Crossword Studio help
Crossword Studio is a tool for creating your own crossword puzzles. For others to "play" puzzles you've created in Crossword Studio, print or export your puzzle.
A crossword puzzle consists of a grid with cells and horizontal or vertical answer slots. The grid is shown in the central grid editor.
A grid cell can be either white or black. You can toggle cells several ways, including...
  • double-click the cell
  • click the Make Cell White/Black toolbar button
  • type ' (apostrophe) into the grid
An answer slot crosses (intersects) several other slots that are perpendicular to its direction.
You can select a slot by clicking it or using arrow keys in the grid. When a slot is selected, you can type letters into its cells using the keyboard.
You can also fill in a slot by picking a suggestion from the matches list. This list shows all known words and phrases that can fit in the selected slot. To help you choose words, it automatically runs what-if scenarios and ranks the words based on the results.
Auto Fill attempts to fill the entire grid with words or phrases from the answer dictionary.
The answer dictionary stores a huge list of words and phrases. You can type any word you want into the grid yourself, but to show up in the matches list or in Auto Fill, a word must be added to the dictionary.
Enter clues for each slot in the clue editor.
When you're done with a puzzle, you can print it or export it as an HTML web page. You can choose to show the solution or to leave the grid blank.

To create a puzzle, typically you:
  1. Decide on a theme
  2. Design a grid to accommodate theme answers
  3. Place theme answers into grid slots
  4. Auto Fill the rest of the grid
  5. Tweak the resulting fill, aided by the matches list
  6. Write clues
  7. Print or export
